What Is Mom Time?

I was running on empty and my patience was waning. Even with a peaceful schedule, my husband knew I was in dire need of some Mom Time - a little time just for me ... alone!

So, what is mom time and how can we get the most out it?

What Is Mom Time?

Mom Time is setting aside time, just for you, to do something that will fill you up. As moms, because we do a lot of pouring out, we need quiet time to fill up.  Recently, I've been feeling depleted.  I thought, I need to plan for Mom Time and communicate my need to my husband.

Exaspterated, it came out like this.
I. NEED. A. BREAK.

Make a point to plan a break, so you don't get to your breaking point.

#1 Schedule It

First, it's important to schedule in Mom Time. After I calmed down, my husband and I decided that he would walk to the park with our toddler most evenings.  This is good bonding time for him and both get exercise. So, it's a win!  I had to communicate this need to the older children as well, so they would understand that Mom was "not available" at the moment.

How do you fit in Mom Time?  Some ideas for a 1 hour break might be:
  • Get up earlier
  • Spouse has play date
  • Grandparents watch children
  • Older child plays with younger child for 1 hour
  • Friends take turns hosting play date

#2 Mom Time Kit

For Mom Time, it's great to read and reflect in a cozy little corner for mom.  To get the most out of Mom Time, you can gather a bag, pen, and journal (for prayer list and mottoes).

Next, choose 3 books per term.
  • 1 book of the Bible
  • 1 Fiction (see suggestion here)
  • 1 Non-fiction (try Mother Culture by Karen Andreola)

#3 Mom Time Treat

Now, when Mom Time arrives, you can just grab your bag, find your cozy corner, and enjoy reading. Don't forget a treat such as a cup of tea. You might try outdoors to soak up sunshine or listen to a little classical music too. All this can enhance your read and reflect time.

If you have a little extra time, why not have a beauty treat too?
  • Beauty walk outdoors & beauty diet (time to log it)
  • Beauty treatment (manicure or bubble bath)
  • Shop for 1 new item in your color coordinated wardrobe

Why Do You Need Mom Time?

I find when I have no breaks, I can't enjoy my family as much, but when I do have breaks, I appreciate them much more and have more to give.  As moms, we are not a tea kettle that never runs dry. In other words, don't feel guilty for needing what every human needs - a little time to yourself.

Get Moving List:
  1. Schedule in Mom Time daily, weekly, etc. (Communicate your need with your spouse or other person and decide on when and how long.)
  2. Gather Mom Time Kit (bag, books, journal, pen)
  3. Treat Yourself (tea, beauty treatment, shopping)
