Preschool Syllabus

The Preschool Classical Core Curriculum for Christians is a prepatory level for ages 2 to 3.  Preschool is non-compulsory in the USA, however, this prepatory level introduces letters, numbers, shapes, colors, and much more for pre-reading, pre-writing, and pre-arithmetic skills.  Children can use this curriculum for 1 or 2 years, and will be more prepared for the Kindergarten Classical Core Curriculum.

Recommendations for Preschool:
  • 30-60 minutes per day
  • 1 Bible story per week (5-10 minutes)
  • Story Time daily - 1 Christian or classic read aloud per week (5-10 minutes)
  • Skill Time daily - 1 letter and 1 number, shape, color, etc. per week (5-10 minutes)
  • Outdoor Play Time and Habit Training daily (20+ minutes)
Recitation^ for Preschool:
  • 1 Scripture Verse per week
  • 3 Prayers per term

Learning Objectives for Preschool:
  1. Language Development:  To hear a good story from (A) Bible Stories, Songs, Verses, (B) Picture Books - both Christian and Classic, and (C), Classic Fairy Tales, Fables, Songs, Poems with a related art or craft project. Language development happens at Story Time!
  2. Skill Development:  To develop focus with a 5-minute seatwork time and to practice letters, numbers, shapes, colors and other preschool skills. Skill development happens at Seat Work Time!
  3. Personal Development:  To practice good habits by applying Bible's lessons and using Chore Cards as desired, and to explore the world with outdoor play daily.  Personal development happens at Play Time!

Special Note:  If nothing else, build literacy! (1) Cancel television completely or limit to 1 meaningful video per day such as Mr. Rodger's Neighborhood with no commercials. (2) Read good books often and fill your home with both Christian and classic picture books.  Libraries do not carry many Christian books, so purchase seperately. We like Little Jewel Books for a picture of Christian living. (3) Talk about the stories especially as your child brings it up. Sometimes my child likes to play-act a classic story such as The Three Little Pigs. When this happens, you know you are building literacy!
*Age 2 children can look at the pictures, while age 3 children may be ready to color, pre-read, and pre-write.
^Recitation, or gentle repetition, builds long-term memory and mastery, and is the common foundation with the classical, Charlotte Mason, and traditional educational styles. See quote below.

"Memory is so foundational to a classical education, and, as you know, is completely countercultural to progressive education. Training the memory is the first practical task of the teacher. Training teachers to focus on memorization in the classroom is really the first practical step in turning that teacher away from modern education to traditional classical education." - Cherly's Lowe
